Reality Shows

Our intention creates reality
~ Wayne Dyer ~

I can’t stand them especially the ones on dating. One of the dating reality shows I watched while channel surfing was Who Wants To Marry My Dad? It’s beyond ridiculous. Adult children of a father will choose one out of 14 or so women to become their father’s next wife. From what I have read online, there’s a mother version to this which is called Meet The Folks minus the marriage.

Then there’s the Bachelor/Bachelorette – I have friends that go crazy over these shows that I’m quite ashamed to call them my friends (I’m being facetious here)! How can people take these shows seriously? You have the main character of these shows kissing and hugging every freaking participants… where’s the value of your love, passion and adoration for THE ONE?

The episode I saw of Who Wants To Marry My Dad? has a woman telling the dad that she isn’t like the rest of the women and she is saving her kisses for when they are more serious. Next thing I know, she’s giving him a mouth job!

Depending on how unlucky (or perhaps, lucky?) these women are, the chosen women have to go through a lie-detector questioned by the children. Of course, a lie-detector specialist is present to monitor the machine. A woman was asked by the children (this father has 3 daughters) if the womand would flirt with her boyfriend and she answered yes – loved the looks on these daughters when it was a legitimate answer. Then one of them asked if the woman has talked behind their backs and she said no… but it turned out she lied! Hilarious. So after 10 minutes of it, I switched to Simpsons – which was a better choice!

But in all seriousness, what are these shows teaching young men and women out there - that it’s okay to kiss every single woman/man? That multiple-dating is alright? Are these reality shows telling people that this is the right way to dating? Whatever happened to finding the right one… the conventional way?

Another reality show that appals me is Toddlers and Tiaras. I’ve seen a few episodes of this show. To me, this show is about mothers trying to live out their dreams through their kids. These women should get their own lives! Kids nowadays grow up so fast without being pushed to do so or exploited in such a way to show how ‘adult’ they can be.

These 4+ year old girls have hair extensions, spray-tanned done on them, tons of make up more than a drag queen would wear, manicure/pedicure or fake nails even and not to forget, fake eyelashes! So these girls see hours on ends getting all of these done on them. Additionally, these girls are dressed provocatively. I don’t know how any mother could put her child(ren) through this kind of torture? Most of these kids I see don’t even look like they are having a lot of fun being in the pageant except for when they win the crown which I think is the main reason why these girls enter in the first place. But it’s a whole different reason for the mothers – I think it’s more about living their dreams through their kids and knowing that their daughter is better than the rest.

Coaching children to be competitive at a young age is a good thing but not to the point of teaching them that they need to be fake to be winners.
